My third book ”Estonian Forest Birds. Songbirds”

In my third book, I have brought together descriptions of forty-six songbirds nesting in our forests, their habitat preferences, and observations gathered over the years regarding the relationships and family life of these feathered creatures. The texts are accompanied by a large number of captured photographic moments, to obtain which I have had to wade through knee-deep snow and listen to the late-spring enticements of female mosquitoes. To see and hear some forest birds, one only needs to pop into the woods. Among the forest birds covered, there are those that could also manage in parks or larger gardens, as well as those whose habitat is suited only to forests.

I hope this book will help to deepen the desire to spend some lovely moments in the bosom of the forest and to become better acquainted not simply with great tits or starlings that can be met even in the garden, but also with other birds, some of which are not often seen outside of forests. The book could belong on the shelf of every bird enthusiast, although it cannot strictly be considered a field guide. There are enough of those in circulation.

I have woven observations gathered over the years into the texts, along with the best times to spot certain species in the wild, which is why it could also suit those who would like to actively get acquainted with a bird and start noting down their own sightings. I have also emphasised in writing that even if one can read about a species and its characteristic behaviour somewhere, all individuals may ultimately have very varied behaviours.

As writing about all forest birds would have burst the book at the seams, I initially tackled 46 forest-dwelling and nesting songbirds. Since there are around 110 species of forest birds, these songbirds make up a fair bit nearly half. At the same time, I have perhaps encountered and interacted with these 46 songbirds the most. To publish a book on the remaining forest birds as well, I still need to put a little effort into capturing some of the species.
