The fourth book, ”Estonian Forest Birds: Owls, Woodpeckers and Others”

Following frequent walks in the forest, visible pathways may form among the trees, much like those of four-legged forest dwellers. There is simply something in these communities full of life that always beckons. Something that helps keep our minds sharp and evokes the joy of discovery. Fortunately, there is no risk that the woods will no longer offer anything new, even after numerous wanderings. After all, our forests are home to nearly 20,000 species. Forest birds, numbering around 110 species depending on the classification, are easier to get acquainted with due to their size and noisiness.

This book is a sequel to the publication „Estonian Forest Birds: Songbirds”, released in 2024, in which I have gathered 24 species. In this piece, I introduce woodpeckers, pigeons, owls, gallinaceous birds and other feathered creatures nesting in forests. Within these covers, one can find descriptions, habitat preferences, and observations gathered over the years regarding the birds' relationships with one another and their family lives. The texts are illustrated by a large number of captured photographic moments, to obtain which I have had to trudge through knee-deep snow and endure the courting of late-spring female mosquitoes.

Among the forest birds discussed, there are those that could also cope in parks or larger gardens, as well as those for which only forests are suitable as habitats.
