About me

My name is Karl Adami

Although I was born and also spent much of my life in the capital, as a child I spent almost all my summers in our country house in Pärnumaa, which was surrounded by forests, rivers, and life. At one point I drifted away from both rural life and nature, but luckily not for too long. My first encounter with photography was at the age of 15, and it was precisely through my interest in photography that I returned to nature.

Over the years, a large number of my works have received attention both in Estonia and abroad, and hundreds of my photographs have been published in print publications (including in the international magazine National Geographic). I contribute to several domestic newspapers and magazines, where I try to introduce, in plain language, both shy and lesser-known species as well as completely ordinary ones that one might even encounter in their own garden.

In addition to trying to capture birds and views in photographs, I also enjoy recording moving images. This has been spurred on by the Estonian Public Broadcasting nature programme ‘Osoon’, to which I have contributed for over 12 years now, and have boldly produced over 100 nature stories. A sharper eye can also see what I have seen and filmed through my lens in the domestic films ’Eia's Christmas at the Phantom Eagle’ and ‘Fred Jüssi. The Beauty of Being’. Over the years, I have accumulated a wealth of clips from diverse nature moments – birds, mammals, insects, various views, and even forestry. 

I've increasingly found myself drawn to documenting things related to forests. My interest in the nature of the forest and its inhabitants has been growing for a long time, but it really gained momentum in 2017 after my first published book, ‘Whispers of the Forest’. I'll never reach a point where I can see all the connections and know nearly 20,000 native forest-related species. But the urge to learn more and more is definitely there. I'm pleased that others have also noticed my love for forests. Because of my forest photography, my collaborators have included, among others Greenpeace, Fern, NRDC, Estonian Nature Fund, BirdLife Europe and Central Asia.
